THE VYŠEHRAD NCM
The basic mission of the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument, a contributory organization of the capital city of Prague founded in 1970, is the management of historical property, rehabilitation, presentation and popularization of a unique monument, which is part of the Prague Monument Reservation and the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
The specificity of Vyšehrad lies in the fact that in a relatively small, clearly defined area, where a large number of functions and meanings is accumulated, be they historical or contemporary. Vyšehrad is not only a national cultural monument and a symbol, it is a living part of the city, its quiet zone, a popular place for rest and walks, a place with rich social and cultural activities and an attractive tourist destination, not only for foreigners, but especially Czech visitors.
Vyšehrad is also a community of people who live and work here, and a unique natural location in the heart of the city. From this stems its uniqueness in the Czech and European context. The concentration of a larger number of people places considerable demands on the maintenance of the entrusted immovable monuments, public spaces and urban greenery. Alongside the presentation, promotion and popularization of the national significance of the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument, it is a public service which rewards no profit.
In addition to managing the property of the capital city of Prague, the mission of our organization is to also support contemporary culture and to balance the interest of visitors, locals and other actors in the area. For this purpose, we actively cooperate with authorities and institutions located in or around Vyšehrad, such as: The Royal Collegiate Chapter of Ss. Peter and Paul, The Jedlička Institute and Schools, The Prague Cemeteries Management, the Department of the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the manor of Prague 2 Municipal Police, Authority of District of Prague 2, the Svatobor Association, Vratislavova Elementary School and also the Institute for the Care of Mother and Child in Podolí.
