Vyšehrad Underground
Martin Casemates at Vyšehrad
Discover the forgotten Church of St. John the Baptist and its unique story. Take a look at the local lapidarium and set off on a tour of the most picturesque part of the casemates.
The casemates under the bastion of St. Paul were built in the second half of the 17th century. They were used by the military garrison to move unnoticed through the sally port into the moat in front of Leopold's Gate. The entrance to the underground is behind the rotunda of St. Martin. The route includes the Church of St. John the Baptist, which now houses a lapidarium.
Tours are conducted only with our guide in Czech and English. A digital guide with other language versions is also available.

What will you see on the tour?

A forgotten church
Hidden inside the earthen ramparts of the Baroque fortifications is the medieval Church of St. John the Baptist, which was deconsecrated in 1787. It served as a warehouse, armory, and dwelling, and the sacristy even served as a pigsty. Discover its story, which is still shrouded in mystery regarding its original purpose and the reasons for its preservation.

Lapidarium
See fragments of Baroque sculptural decorations from St. Peter and Paul Basilica, which took on its present form at the end of the 19th century. The Church of St. John the Baptist houses original portals, the oldest tombstone in Vyšehrad, and a lost statue of an angel from Prague's Loreto.

The most picturesque casemates
The Martin casemates are fascinating for their intricate layout, steep staircases, blind sections, and mysterious openings of unclear function. The impressive atmosphere is enhanced by daylight streaming through the ventilation shafts.
