Discover the forgotten Church of St. John the Baptist and its unique story. Take a look at the local lapidarium and set off on a tour of the most picturesque part of the casemates.
The casemates under the bastion of St. Paul were built in the second half of the 17th century. They were used by the military garrison to move unnoticed through the sally port into the moat in front of Leopold's Gate. The entrance to the underground is behind the rotunda of St. Martin. The route includes the Church of St. John the Baptist, which now houses a lapidarium.

Leopold Gate
The Leopold Gate is the main entrance to Vyšehrad. Although only the main façade of the original design was completed, it is richly decorated. During the tour, you will discover its story and walk through the fortress garden in the gate’s moat, which recalls Vyšehrad’s long tradition of cultivation. For centuries, orchards, vegetable gardens, vineyards and other cultivated areas were a natural part of everyday life at Vyšehrad.
A forgotten church
Hidden within the Baroque fortifications is the deconsecrated Church of St John the Baptist. Built in the 14th century, it was one of the few buildings to survive both the Hussite sack of Vyšehrad and its later transformation into a Baroque fortress, when the church was rebuilt and incorporated into the earthen ramparts. Discover its remarkable story and see fragments of the Baroque sculptural decoration of the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul, original stone portals, the oldest tombstone at Vyšehrad, and even a long-lost statuette of an angel from the Prague Loreto.
Traces of the Past in the Sacristy
The sacristy of the Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist bears traces of its turbulent history after 1787. The building was used as a military armoury and later as housing for the poor, while the sacristy itself was even turned into an animal stall. Discover the traces left by these changing uses, reflecting the long interplay between the religious and military worlds at Vyšehrad.

- The tour is not wheelchair accessible.
