  • We Have Restored the Gate to the Acropolis

    03/11/2025

The National Cultural Monument Vyšehrad continues its efforts to restore small historical landmarks. In June, we successfully completed the full restoration of the entrance gate to the Vyšehrad Acropolis. The team of restorers returned the gate to its original appearance, including the imperial emblem – the double-headed eagle, which can now be seen on the side facing the park. The restoration was based on historical documentation. The gate is a remnant of the Vyšehrad armory, which was completely destroyed by fire in 1927. It remains the only surviving physical reminder of this military structure. You can learn more about the historical development of the Vyšehrad Acropolis at the exhibition "The Rise and Fall of Vyšehrad." The gate restoration is part of a long-term project to restore small monuments at Vyšehrad, which has been ongoing since 2020. Next in line is the restoration of the central part of Karlach’s Gardens, particularly the Neo-Gothic well. You can also contribute to the

  • Roof Repairs of the Basilica Continue

    03/11/2025

For over a year now, one of Vyšehrad’s iconic landmarks, the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul, has been covered in scaffolding. The reason is an extensive roof renovation currently underway. The project involves the complete replacement of the slate roofing, reconstruction of the roof trusses, masonry repairs in the attic, and partial replacement of sheet metal elements. All this work is being carried out on a roof covering an area of 1,650 square meters and consisting of 59,400 slate tiles. This year’s phase of exterior work has been successfully completed. The final slate tiles have been placed on the main nave. Attention is now shifting to the interior of the nave. You too can help keep this national treasure dry. A public fundraising campaign is being organized by the Royal Collegiate Chapter of St. Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad. The total cost of the work is expected to reach 45 million CZK. As of today, nearly two-thirds of this amount has been secured. The National Cultural Monument

  • Revitalization of Lumírovy Gardens

    03/11/2025

The revitalization of Lumírovy Gardens, located next to the Vyšehrad fortification walls, will transform the area into a functional space for relaxation, sports, and social gatherings. The gradual improvement is taking place in three phases, with the third phase expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Even now, we can already see significant changes compared to the garden’s original state – a new children’s playground and a paved path leading to the gate into the moat of Leopold’s Gate. This gate was opened last year to shorten the route into the Vyšehrad complex for visitors coming from Nusle. Currently, the second phase of work is underway, focusing on park pathways, the construction of a new amphitheater, and a path leading to an outdoor fitness area. Completion is expected in mid-September 2025. The third phase will focus on landscaping, greenery restoration, and the installation of new park furniture such as benches, trash bins, and lighting. Myths and historyAT VYŠEHRAD

Krok and his daughters

Krok and his daughters

Although we associate Vyšehrad with the oldest Czech legends, where Duke Krok and his daughters Kazi, Teta, and Libuše resided, we do not actually know where it was located. It was probably somewhere in the vicinity of Berounka, 30 km from here. Vyšehrad is mentioned in the oldest chronicles only in connection with the Girls' Wars, which broke out after the death of Princess Libuše and which, as is well known, did not end well for women.

Where Šemík jumped from

Where Šemík jumped from

Who doesn't know the legend of Horymír and his brave horse Šemík, who saved him by jumping from the Vyšehrad rock? However, there is no mention of Šemík in the oldest chronicles. The story was first recorded by Václav Hájek of Libočany in his Czech Chronicle, and was probably inspired by the true story of the robber baron Eppelein of Gailingen.
