Electric cars for Vyšehrad
12/01/2026Welcome Šemík and Bivoj. Vyšehrad has two new additions to its team that you definitely won't miss. They are the Šemík and Bivoj electric cars, which we acquired thanks to the European Union as part of the National Recovery Plan. We already have Šemík, and Bivoj will arrive at the end of January. These vehicles will greatly help us in our long-term efforts to maintain and improve the entire Vyšehrad to the highest possible standard. The project focuses on ensuring environmentally friendly and efficient transport services in the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument complex, which is located in the center of Prague and is part of the urban conservation area listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The aim of the project is to purchase two electric utility vehicles that will be used to provide operational logistics, transport materials, and technical equipment within the grounds of the Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument (NKP). Project implementation period: October 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026

More informationHurvínek's tree at Vyšehrad
01/12/2025Two weeks ago, Hurvínek's tree was ceremoniously planted in the heart of the Vyšehrad. The most famous Czech puppet will celebrate its 100th birthday next year. The Vyšehrad National Cultural Monument therefore decided to dedicate the Czech national tree to it, which will grow for at least another hundred years. The tree can be found in Karlachovy sady between the statue of St. John of Nepomuk and Čertovy kameny (Devil's Stones). The planting of the memorial tree took place on November 17 in the presence of Petr Kučera, director of the Vyšehrad, and Denisa Kirschnerová, director of the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theater. Hurvínek himself and his entire puppet family also lent a hand. Spejbl, Mánička, Kateřina, and Žeryk were all there. Hurvínek's dog is the central character in a children's play called Žeryčku, hop!, which will be performed by the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theater in the Burgrave's residence at Vyšehrad until December.
More informationExhibition in Gorlice extended
21/11/2025Due to great public interest, we are extending the current exhibition Glass and Light in Gorlice until January 4, 2026. The exhibition reveals light objects created by students of the glass school in Kamenický Šenov – the oldest glass school in the world, which will celebrate 170 years since its founding in 2026. The exhibition presents the work of the Light Objects Design studio. The exhibits are complemented by the unique space of the Gorlice hall, where some of the original sculptures from Charles Bridge are permanently located. The largest underground hall in historic Prague is thus transformed into a unique space connecting glass, light, contemporary design, and history. You can continue to visit the exhibition daily as part of guided tours of the Vyšehrad underground, specifically the Casemates to Gorlice.
More informationCelebrations of the Velvet Revolution
17/11/2025For the second year Vyšehrad was the venue for a memorial and commemorative event called Free November (Svobodný listopad). Through this event, the student organization of the same name commemorates the key events of November 17, 1939, and 1989. In front of the Burgrave's residence building, there were performances by school choirs, clubs, and initiatives. There were also speeches by representatives of academics, students from Czech universities, and political science student platforms. The reason why the memorial ceremony commemorating November 17 was moved to Vyšehrad for the second time is the long-term reconstruction of Albertov, where Free November is usually held. It was Albertov where the original student march on November 17, 1989, began. And how is Vyšehrad connected? Vyšehrad was the place where the march was headed. Specifically, to the grave of Karel Hynek Mácha in the Vyšehrad Cemetery.
More informationWe Have Restored the Gate to the Acropolis
03/11/2025The National Cultural Monument Vyšehrad continues its efforts to restore small historical landmarks. In June, we successfully completed the full restoration of the entrance gate to the Vyšehrad Acropolis. The team of restorers returned the gate to its original appearance, including the imperial emblem – the double-headed eagle, which can now be seen on the side facing the park. The restoration was based on historical documentation. The gate is a remnant of the Vyšehrad armory, which was completely destroyed by fire in 1927. It remains the only surviving physical reminder of this military structure. You can learn more about the historical development of the Vyšehrad Acropolis at the exhibition "The Rise and Fall of Vyšehrad." The gate restoration is part of a long-term project to restore small monuments at Vyšehrad, which has been ongoing since 2020. Next in line is the restoration of the central part of Karlach’s Gardens, particularly the Neo-Gothic well. You can also contribute to the
More informationRoof Repairs of the Basilica Continue
03/11/2025For over a year now, one of Vyšehrad’s iconic landmarks, the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul, has been covered in scaffolding. The reason is an extensive roof renovation currently underway. The project involves the complete replacement of the slate roofing, reconstruction of the roof trusses, masonry repairs in the attic, and partial replacement of sheet metal elements. All this work is being carried out on a roof covering an area of 1,650 square meters and consisting of 59,400 slate tiles. This year’s phase of exterior work has been successfully completed. The final slate tiles have been placed on the main nave. Attention is now shifting to the interior of the nave. You too can help keep this national treasure dry. A public fundraising campaign is being organized by the Royal Collegiate Chapter of St. Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad. The total cost of the work is expected to reach 45 million CZK. As of today, nearly two-thirds of this amount has been secured. The National Cultural Monument
