The rise and fall of vyšehrad

The exhibition reveals the transformations of Vyšehrad—from the seat of the first Czech king and a symbol of royal power, through its role as a military fortress, to its current status as a spiritual and national symbol.
Vyšehrad is known as a place connected with Czech legends. In reality, however, this rock above the Vltava River attracted settlement as early as prehistoric times, as evidenced by findings dating back to around 3800 BC. Vyšehrad entered the historical stage in the mid-10th century as the oldest residence of the Přemyslid dynasty. It reached its greatest prosperity under the rule of the first Czech king, Vratislav, and later Charles IV. A significant role in its history was played by the Vyšehrad Chapter, which survived all its ups and downs. Follow in their footsteps.
The exhibition can also be visited as part of the guided tour Royal Vyšehrad (coming soon).
We also offer a special program for school groups.

Archaeological Finds

Archaeological Finds

Systematic research of Vyšehrad has been ongoing almost continuously since 1924. Explore the most fascinating discoveries—from prehistoric pottery and the oldest Czech coins to a medieval ice skate and a hand grenade from the fortress era.
Don’t miss the unique opportunity to browse through the Vyšehrad Codex.

Physical Models

Physical Models

Discover the lost appearance of Vyšehrad and its buildings through detailed physical models. Before your eyes, the Romanesque Basilica of St. Lawrence, the Gothic gate Špička, and the Baroque armory come to life. A large-scale model of Vyšehrad and its surroundings will transport you to the era of its greatest prosperity in the 14th century.

Field Cannon

Field Cannon

Take a look at a replica of an 18th-century field cannon, along with other weapons and equipment that recall Vyšehrad’s military past. These items have been kindly loaned to the exhibition by the interest group Terezín – City of Change, with whom we collaborate to promote fortress heritage.
