The rise and fall of vyšehrad exhibition
The exhibition presents the transformations of Vyšehrad—from the seat of the first Czech king, through a military fortress, to a spiritual and national symbol.
Vyšehrad is best known as a place connected with Czech legends. In reality, however, it was inhabited as early as prehistoric times, as evidenced by finds dating back to around 3800 BC. It entered recorded history in the mid-10th century as a seat of the Přemyslid dynasty and reached its greatest prosperity during the reign of King Vratislaus and later Charles IV. An important role in its history has been played by the Vyšehrad Chapter, which remains active here to this day.
The exhibition can be visited independently or as part of the tour routes Casemates to Gorlice.
Highlights of the Exhibition

Archaeological Finds
Systematic research of Vyšehrad has been ongoing almost continuously since 1924. Explore the most fascinating discoveries—from prehistoric pottery and the oldest Czech coins to a medieval ice skate and a hand grenade from the fortress era.
Don’t miss the unique opportunity to browse through the Vyšehrad Codex.

Physical Models
Discover the lost appearance of Vyšehrad and its buildings through detailed physical models. Before your eyes, the Romanesque Basilica of St. Lawrence, the Gothic gate Špička, and the Baroque armory come to life. A large-scale model of Vyšehrad and its surroundings will transport you to the era of its greatest prosperity in the 14th century.

Field Cannon
Take a look at a replica of an 18th-century field cannon, along with other weapons and equipment that recall Vyšehrad’s military past. These items have been kindly loaned to the exhibition by the interest group Terezín – City of Change, with whom we collaborate to promote fortress heritage.
