Vyšehrad Underground

Casemates to Gorlice

Discover Gorlice, the largest underground hall in historic Prague, and the fascinating changes in its use over the centuries. Venture into the oldest part of the casemates and touch the Vyšehrad rock.

The casemates in the northern part of the Vyšehrad fortifications were built in the second half of the 17th century. They were used by the military garrison for quick, unnoticed movement, food storage, and, in case of siege, accommodation. The entrance to the underground is from the Brick Gate, where the military guardhouse was located. The underground passage leads to the monumental Gorlice Hall, hidden in the bastion of St. Bernard.

Tours are conducted only with our guide in Czech and English. A digital guide with other language versions is available.

Practical information can be found below on this page.

What will you see on the tour?

The youngest Vyšehrad gate

The youngest Vyšehrad gate

The youngest Vyšehrad gate was completed in 1849. The monumental passageway with military guard rooms resembles a temple rather than a gate. The exhibition will introduce you to the architectural development of the Vyšehrad Citadel and its fortifications, with the help of period plans and graphics. You can also see a replica of a field cannon and examples of period ammunition.

Gorlice was actually created by mistake, due to an error by the fortification builder. We will introduce you to its incredible story and transformations from a food warehouse to an underground factory to a place where you can now find six original Baroque statues from Charles Bridge.

Beneath St. Bernard's bastion lies the oldest blind section of the casemates, which ends directly in the rock. You can explore it yourself and try to find the "foundation brick" of the casemates from 1654.
